I have become interested in the idea of making wearable metal work and thinking about the physical restraints wearing heavy iron creates.
These masks are inspired by 15th century masks of shame, or Schandmaskes, which were used as a way of publicly shaming and punishing the wearer for an offence they may have committed. They use traditional blacksmithing motifs, such as the Acanthus leaf, which have been reworked into a new use as ears, a tongue and a nose .
These three masks represent ' See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil'. I am now working on ways to animate these masks through various collaborations. I am currently working with a poet and some traditional folk story tellers.
